Broadway Housing Communities is seeking an Assistant Teacher for our art-based and
Reggio-inspired Early Childhood Programs. This is a full-day program, committed to
providing individualized, comprehensive educational services for 3-5 year old children
and their families in West Harlem.
● Supports classroom teachers and leads age groups in implementing high quality and
developmentally appropriate practice.
● Planning and supervising a warm, nurturing developmentally appropriate environment
for the development of the whole child while practicing Dorothy Day Early Childhood
Center’s high level of care and educational standards.
● Designing and maintaining a classroom environment that facilitates active, hands-on
learning, group management, self-expression and choice, cultural diversity and
inclusion of all children, parents, volunteers and staff.
● Assist with the planning and implementing of lessons.
● Document student progress through work samples, observations and Teaching
Strategies Gold Assessments.
● Participate in mandatory planning, staff meetings and Professional Development.
● Ensures implementation of Broadway Housing Communities philosophy and
foundational beliefs in all educational practices e.g. Reggio-based curriculum, inclusive
and anti-bias education, and instructional practices.
● Supports roll out of Education and Development initiatives in program
● Uses education quality tools (e.g.work samples, small group notes, and child
observations), to assess program and curriculum implementation.
● Supports and identifies interventions for behavior challenges.
● Partners and communicates effectively with families.
● Serve as a role-model for all teachers.
Prefer a minimum of 9 college credits in early childhood education or childhood education
and/or intention to enroll in an education program. A minimum of one year of early childhood
experience is necessary. Candidates should also possess knowledge and understanding of
child development, and developmentally appropriate teaching strategies.
