The Core Body of Knowledge
The Core Body of Knowledge: New York Stateβs Core Competencies for Early Childhood Educators is a resource that provides a comprehensive outline of the knowledge and skills required to be an effective early childhood educator. New York State uses the Core Body of Knowledge to align professional learning experiences for early childhood educators.
Multiple editions of the CBK are available to support the evolving needs of the early childhood field. Resources from both the 2012 and 2024 edition are available below.
The CBK was most recently updated in 2024 and is intended to guide current and future professional learning, systems alignment, and policy development.
The 2012 edition is available to support continued use of the Assessment and Professional Development Planning Tool, which is still being developed for the 2024 CBK. Programs and professionals can continue to reference this edition for reflection, assessment, and professional growth.
The interactive competencies reflect the structure and language of the 2012 CBK. They are provided as a navigable reference to support exploration of competency areas and use of the associated assessment tool. Interactive content aligned to the 2024 CBK will be added in a future phase.
