We seek warm, energetic teaching artists to collaborate in designing and teaching Sunday Family Programs, including FAM/Family Art Magic, birthday parties, and our new weekend drop-in art-making program.

Responsibilities:

  • FAM/Family Art Magic:
    • Work in educator pairs to plan a 90-minute program for 4-6 year olds with an adult companion.  Lessons are inspired by the semester’s theme, the Museum’s collection, and/or studio art materials and processes.
    • Co-teach the lesson gallery and studio components, which include:
    • Gallery discussion with participants that is age-appropriate, family-friendly, focuses on Museum objects, and explores the goals of the lesson.
    • In-gallery independent family activity (e.g. sketching, material explorations, a gallery hunt, etc.)
    • Studio project that is linked to the gallery objects/tour theme.
    • Studio prep and clean-up
    • Session-end program evaluation and promoting other Brooklyn Museum programs to the audience.
  • New Sunday Free Drop-In Program (name TBD):
    • Work with families (all ages) in a gallery or studio setting, either with a set of supplies for open and creative exploration, and/or in partnership with a visiting artist or community partner to realize a project of that artist’s design.
    • Collaborate on program and printed materials
    • Assist with setting up and cleaning up art-making space.
    • Support Museum’s goals by sharing program information and/or assisting with evaluation process for program.
  • Birthday Parties (up to 4 per year):
    • Plan and facilitate a learning experience for ages 4 and up with gallery exploration and art-making that is age-appropriate and focuses on Museum objects, including art-making that is linked to the gallery objects/tour theme.
    • Lessons are designed by Coordinator, adapted with Teaching Artist as needed after Coordinator meets with client
    • Studio prep and clean-up
    • With Coordinator, act as co-host for the family
  • Meetings and Professional Development
    • Annual All-Staff Training (2 hours)
    • Minimum 3 hours/month for 7 months: research, prep & planning meetings

Qualifications:

  • A demonstrable commitment to our vision of art as a catalyst for a connected, civic, and empathetic world.
  • Bachelor’s degree or B.F.A. in visual arts, education/early childhood education, art history, or a related field
  • Minimum of one year of museum teaching experience
  • Gallery and studio teaching skills with experience with a variety of media.
  • Comfortable collaborating as well as working independently on lesson development and delivery
  • Strong working knowledge of education theory and childhood developmental stages
  • Excellent group management, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Bilingual candidates encouraged.

Salary:

  • FAM and Birthday Parties$50/hr teaching (includes setup and cleanup); $40/hr research, prep, planning.
  • New Free Weekend Program: $40/hr teaching (includes setup and cleanup)

Schedule: Sundays:

  • FAM (18 days/year): 10 am-1 pm, October 16-November 20; January 8-February 12; March 5-April 2.
  • New Free Weekend Program: (20 Sundays/year): exact dates TBD
  • Birthday Parties (up to 4/year): 3-6 pm, various Sundays
