The Cullman Child Development Center is excited to open a new location at the Harrison House Childcare Center in Cooperstown in Fall 2026. With an established center in Sidney, this is a unique opportunity to help shape a high-quality early childhood education environment. The role offers strong support for ongoing professional development and educational growth. Interviews will be conducted throughout Summer and into Fall 2026.

Job Description

The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in providing a safe, engaging, and nurturing classroom for an assigned group of children (Infant, Toddler, or Pre-School, depending on placement). This is a great entry point into early childhood education, with opportunities for mentorship and growth into a Lead Teacher role.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing daily lesson plans and classroom routines
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment
  • Support supervision of children at all times, helping maintain required OCFS staff-to-child ratios
  • Assist with feeding, diapering/toileting, napping, and other daily care routines as age-appropriate
  • Support positive guidance and age-appropriate behavior management strategies
  • Communicate with families alongside the Lead Teacher regarding children’s day and needs
  • Help prepare classroom materials and assist with setup during the center’s initial opening
  • Participate in required staff training and professional development
Qualifications
  • Must meet NYS OCFS minimum qualification requirements for an assistant teacher under 18 NYCRR Part 418-1 (generally a high school diploma or equivalent, with OCFS-approved training; a CDA credential, college coursework in Early Childhood Education, or an Early Childhood Certificate Program is a plus and may be required depending on ratio/role)
  • Experience working with children in a licensed child care, camp, or educational setting preferred but not required for entry-level candidates
  • Willingness to pursue a CDA or related credential, with support from the center, is encouraged
  • Current or ability to obtain OCFS-required health and safety training, CPR/First Aid certification, and background clearance (fingerprinting, Statewide Central Register check)
  • Patience, reliability, and a genuine enthusiasm for working with young children
  • Medical experience or coursework (e.g., CNA, EMT, nursing student) is a bonus
  • Minimum Education Level: Highschool Graduate or GED
  • Preferred Education Level: CDA Credential
