Job Description

The Per Diem Floater supports the daily operations of the center by providing flexible coverage across multiple classrooms. This role works under the direction of the Teacher and Director to help maintain a safe, structured, and engaging environment for children.

Responsibilities include assisting with classroom activities, supporting daily routines and transitions, and actively engaging with children in a positive and appropriate manner. The Floater helps maintain cleanliness and organization of classroom spaces, ensures materials are prepared and accessible, and supports staff in delivering developmentally appropriate learning experiences.

This role requires the ability to adapt quickly to different classrooms and age groups, follow established schedules and procedures, and work collaboratively with team members. The Per Diem Floater may also assist with observing children’s behavior and development and support communication with staff regarding classroom needs.

All duties must be performed in accordance with center policies and state regulations to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all children.

  • Provide classroom coverage across multiple age groups as needed
  • Assist teachers with daily routines, activities, and transitions
  • Actively engage with children in a positive, attentive, and appropriate manner
  • Support the implementation of developmentally appropriate activities
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment
  • Help prepare and manage classroom materials and supplies
  • Encourage positive behavior, self-help skills, and good hygiene practices
  • Ensure smooth transitions throughout the day (arrival, activities, meals, departure)
  • Follow all center policies, procedures, and state regulations
  • Communicate effectively with staff and support a team-oriented environment
  • Observe children’s behavior and report any concerns to lead staff
  • Adapt quickly to different classrooms, schedules, and age groups as assigned
Qualifications

Candidates must have a minimum of 1–2 years of professional childcare experience and a basic understanding of child development. Applicants should be dependable, flexible, and able to adapt to different classrooms and age groups as needed.

A High School Diploma or GED is required, with ECE coursework or a CDA preferred. Candidates must have strong communication and teamwork skills, along with the ability to engage positively with children and support a structured learning environment.

Infant/Child CPR and First Aid certification is required (or willingness to obtain). All candidates must be able to pass a full background check and health screening in accordance with state regulations.
