New York State's Core Competencies for Early Childhood Educators
The Core Body of Knowledge: New York State’s Core Competencies for Early Childhood Educators is a resource that provides a comprehensive outline of the knowledge and skills required to be an effective early childhood educator. New York State uses the Core Body of Knowledge to align professional learning experiences for early childhood educators.
The fourth and most recent edition of the Core Body of Knowledge was updated in 2024. Programs and professionals who want to use the CBK's Assessment and Professional Development Planning Tool can continue to reference the 2012 edition while the tool is being updated.
Important: These interactive competencies reflect the structure and language of the 2012 CBK. They are provided as a navigable reference to support exploration of competency areas and use of the associated assessment tool. Interactive content aligned to the 2024 CBK will be added in a future phase.
