Description:

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated and creative Lead Teacher for our afterschool programs. This is an excellent position for a college student or professional interested in working with K-12 aged students outside of the traditional classroom setting. Homes for the Homeless transitional facilities offer a continuum of educational services for children on site, from infant development to adolescent dropout prevention. The core of our child-centered programs includes afterschool programs, accelerated afterschool education, and constructive recreational programming.
ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS, INC.
Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Develop lesson plans and assists students with homework and school projects. • Lead activities with groups of students and assist program coordinator and head teacher in the planning of enrichment activities and trips. • Work with program staff to update bulletin boards in the classroom and main hallway. • Maintain flexibility and openness to classroom scheduling adjustments. • Maintain a clean, bright and active classroom environment. • Participate in staff meetings, conferences and trainings. • Assist in book fairs, holiday parties and activities, plays, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Possess a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field and a NYS teaching certification; or a Health Department approved accredited study plan to qualify within 7 years
• At least two years of experience as a group teacher in a program for children under 6 years of age. • Kind, creative, flexible and caring personality that works well with children and as part of the after-school program staff team.
• Must be willing to consent to a multi-phase criminal background check.
• Sensitivity and awareness while working with homeless and vulnerable populations.
• Ability to lift 40 or more pounds.
• Ability to sit on the floor, bend down, and pick up children throughout the course of an eight-hour shift.
