{"id":315,"date":"2012-09-13T14:32:35","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T18:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/earlychildhoodnyc.org\/newswatch\/?p=315"},"modified":"2012-09-13T14:32:35","modified_gmt":"2012-09-13T18:32:35","slug":"the-chicagos-teacher-strike-whats-really-at-stake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earlychildhoodny.org\/blog\/the-chicagos-teacher-strike-whats-really-at-stake\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chicago&#8217;s Teacher Strike &#8211; What&#8217;s Really at Stake?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chicago teacher&#8217;s strike has entered its third day, and ironically enough, the strike has little to do with the issue of pay (which may be an illegal action according to Illinois state law).<\/p>\n<p>The primary issues from Mayor Rahm Emanuel&#8217;s side are teacher evaluations that include measures of\u00a0student\u00a0achievement\u00a0and giving principals the authority to hire teachers they want.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Teachers Union is stating the issues are more complex: increasing class size,\u00a0deteriorating\u00a0school buildings and job security (re-hiring laid off teachers).<\/p>\n<p>But what about the 350,000 kids in the Chicago Public School district? What &#8220;win&#8221; will they get out of this strike?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">The debate of reforming\u00a0America&#8217;s education system continues and <\/span>Nicholas Kristof provides some\u00a0important\u00a0insights on it&#8230;even stating that it has <em>&#8220;everything to do with providing early-childhood education to at-risk kids.&#8221;<\/em> You can read his article that\u00a0appeared\u00a0in <em>The New York Times<\/em> here:\u00a0<a title=\"Students Over Unions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/13\/opinion\/kristof-students-over-unions.html?_r=1&amp;ref=todayspaper\">Students Over Unions<\/a>.\u00a0Then tell us what you think on improving teacher quality as part of education reform by leaving a comment.
