Homes for the Homeless, Inc is actively seeking a UPK Head Teacher for our new facility opening in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx that will house families with children experiencing homelessness. The Head Teacher will manage our daycare center at this facility, and qualified candidates will have experience working with high-needs children and be able to thoughtfully and creatively address the needs of the families we serve. This position is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic childcare and education professional to develop a high-quality program that meets the needs of a high-risk, vulnerable population.

 

About Homes for the Homeless:

Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, after-school clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a classroom of up to 20 children between 2-5 years old.
  • Supervise staff in daily operations of the center and in classroom activities.
  • Coordinate recruiting and enrollment efforts and monitor attendance.
  • Collaborate with staff on curriculum development and daily lesson planning.
  • Cooperate with administration and other department directors regarding child and family progress and needs.
  • Coordinate with administration for staff training and development.
  • Supervise and further develop progress assessments.
  • Provide reports to agency administrators and program funders as needed.
  • Liaise with appropriate City agencies including DOE, DOH, and ACS.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in early childhood education or related field of study.
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field and a NYS teaching certification; or a Health Department approved accredited study plan to qualify within 7 years 
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team and coordinate with other department directors as needed.
  • Enthusiasm and a positive, strengths-based approach to program management and development.
  • Must be able to pass a multi-stage background investigation which includes employment history and criminal background check.
  • Sensitivity and awareness of working with homeless and vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to lift 40 or more pounds.
  • Ability to sit on the floor, bend down, and pick up children throughout the course of an eight-hour shift.
