Position Summary: Children’s Aid, established in 1853, is one of New York City’s leading child and family service organizations. Today the Children’s Aid Early Childhood Department serves nearly 1200 low-income children ages 0-5 in schools and community centers across 14 sites throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, through a combination of Universal Preschool, Head Start and Early Head Start funding and child care subsidies. The Lead Teacher position provides direct services to children in the classroom setting and works in partnership with co-teachers and parents to provide high quality early childhood programming.
Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the site’s Education Director, the Lead Teacher’s responsibilities include the following:
Curriculum and Instruction
Record Maintenance, Screening and Assessment
Family Engagement
Professional Development
Health and Safety
And other related duties as assigned, at the discretion of the Educational Director and /or Children’s Aid.
Qualifications: The Lead Teacher must have qualifications that satisfy Federal Head Start requirements, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Article 47 regulations, and Universal Preschool Guidelines.
Preferred Credentials (required for UPK Lead Teachers):
(1) A master’s or baccalaureate degree in early childhood education or related field of study and
(2) A current, valid teaching certificate issued by the New York State Education Department. This may include early childhood (Birth-Grade 2); Nursery, Kindergarten and Grades 1-6; or Prekindergarten – Grade 6 certification.
Accepted Credentials:
(1) In order to meet the preferred credentials above, Lead Teachers may be on a study plan, approved by an accredited college, to be completed within a specified period of time agreed to by Children’s Aid, the teacher and the college which is a condition of employment that cannot be extended. In order to be eligible for a study plan, a teacher must have:
(A) A Baccalaureate or master’s degree in any other academic subject and one year paid classroom experience teaching children up to third grade; or
(B) A Baccalaureate in any field and admittance into the Teach for America program, passed a rigorous early childhood content exams (CST, ATSW, LAST), and participated in the TFA summer training institute.
Other Qualifications:
A review and final determination of credentials and qualifications are reserved for the site Education Director and the Children’s Aid Director of Early Childhood Programs.
