La Escuelita, a Bilingual (Spanish/English) preschool on the Upper West Side is seeking applicants for a Head Teacher.

About us

La Escuelita was founded in 2003 by two moms, both educators, who wanted a Spanish immersion preschool for their children that combined play based education with some teacher directed activity. The preschool serves children ages 2-5.

Responsibilities:

The Head Teacher will be responsible for management of a classroom, supported by two assistant teachers.

The Head Teacher will:

  • Ensure a safe and developmentally appropriate classroom environment in Spanish.
  • Develop classroom curriculum, including unit plans that are inspired by the interest of the children in the classroom and provide weekly schedules to parents.
  • Assist Educational Director in ensuring DOH and NAEYC standards are met in the classroom.
  • Proactively communicate with parents via emails and in person and be available to parents for questions.
  • Hold Parent-Teacher conferences 3x per year.
  • Supervise two classroom assistant teachers
  • Identify when a child may need evaluation for early intervention services and work with Educational Director on recommendation to parents.

Qualifications:

A bachelors or advanced degree in early childhood education (ECE) OR a bachelors or advanced degree in another field with coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education + experience teaching preschool-age children OR an associate's degree in ECE and be enrolled in a college/university program leading to baccalaureate degree.

  • NYS Birth-Grade 2 certification or a study plan to achieve that in the near future. Bilingual extension preferred.
  • Ability to positively interact with families of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to read, write and teach fluently in Spanish
  • Ability to use a positive approach in directing and redirecting child behavior.
  • Ability to take a leadership role in the classroom.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Good computer and data entry skills.
  • Ability to possess and maintain current First Aid/CPR certification.

The school year runs from September through June, with opportunity to teach during 4 week Summer Program for additional salary.
